Welcome Message – Department of Pediatrics
The Department of Pediatrics is committed to excellence in scholarly activity, education and the clinical care of children and adolescents. As a proud graduate and faculty member of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, I know first-hand how an impeccable foundation in medical education, coupled with a strong residency program, aids in the development of the most knowledgeable, compassionate pediatricians.
Driven by our three-pronged mission, the Department of Pediatrics makes a visible impact in the community and in the lives of the people we serve. Our team of talented pediatric specialists offers the most comprehensive care available in the Midlands, from well-child care to surgical trauma. We are partners in care—working with parents and families to guide the health of children while providing the highest quality care. Residents work alongside faculty experts who provide them with hands-on, real-world medical experience. And, we are conducting research in many vital areas that impacts the health of South Carolina’s children, including quality improvement. Two of our residents this year were honored with one of the highest awards in the state in recognition of their quality improvement project.
I am especially proud of the accomplishments of our team of almost 100 faculty members who are the ultimate reason for the ongoing achievements of this nationally recognized department. Our ABP board pass rates are among the highest in the nation. We have always strived to be innovative in providing education and training to our residents. We were among the very first programs in the country over 20 years ago to provide continuity in the private practice office setting. To that we added a longitudinal practice management curriculum. Our community advocacy program was instituted years before it became a focus of the RRC, based on our belief that a pediatrician is always a child advocate! Now, we are among the handful of pediatric residency programs that provide ultrasound training to our residents through a longitudinal curriculum. The use of ultrasound will enable the pediatrician of the future to provide a higher level of care for children.
We care about South Carolina’s children, and we strive every day to make this apparent in our clinical care, research and medical education endeavors.
